L-citrulline is an intermediate amino acid in the synthesis of arginine that also intervenes in the production of nitric oxide, a molecule involved in vasodilation.

When combined with malic acid, L-citrulline malate is obtained. L-citrulline malate increases the utilization of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) during physical exercise, which are metabolized in the muscle to generate energy, and promotes physical performance.

Its consumption before exercise can also help to reduce fatigue and relieve muscle pain, as shown by a study in which participants ingested L-citrulline malate prior to performing anaerobic exercise.
